Here's What You Need to Know

Don't worry! You don't need to know what you are doing. You don't need to know the poses. But here is what you need to know to make your first few days easier.

What to expect in Mysore - the first time you walk into Mysore it might look like a free for all - but each student has been taught individually by a highly trained teacher. The foundation of the practice is based on relationships between students and teachers - which is amazing because it means that your practice is custom tailored to YOU. So, be sure to say hello. Let's get to know each other. Tell the teacher if you have injuries, concerns, or questions. Don't worry about whether or not you know the sequence right away - a teacher or assistant will guide you. No cheat sheets allowed in the room, but we might send you home with one to study. This practice is taught one pose at a time and each pose is customized to work for your body type. Watch a video here on what to expect your first day in Mysore.

Mentorship Program - we offer all students access to a mentor. This is a program unique to Flow Yoga Center and it is designed to serve you and help you grow as a practitioner. A mentor is someone who pushed the Ashtanga Play button before you and can help guide you through your practice. A mentor understands what you are going through because they have been there before. Want to be paired with a mentor? Let us know.

Show Up! The most important thing is that you show up. Show up when it's hard, show up before you are ready, show up when you don't want to. The repetition of the Ashtanga Yoga system gives us the opportunity to imprint new skills and hone our skills. It leads to transformation.

Keep in touch! Seriously, we want to get to know you. And we want you to get to know us. We have fun community events and outings, we share information that is useful for practice, and we send out updates for Moondays, events, closures, subs, etc. Join our Facebook Group and email list so you never miss an announcement (and so you don't show up on a Moonday!).

The Practice

Don't worry, our team of teachers will teach you the sequence pose by pose, and make the poses work for your body. But a little studying never hurt anyone.

In the Ashtanga system we chant to open and close our practice. This is a way for us to differentiate what we are doing on our mat from a workout and to acknowledge the lineage who have passed this practice down to us. Listen to the opening and closing chants.
