Course begins January 27, 2019 and ends March 9, 2019
Sunday January 27 2pm PDT
This week will be an introduction to the Ashtanga Yoga system. We will discuss frequently asked questions about Ashtanga Yoga, including how Primary Series works and the effect that it has on the body and mind.
Primary Series is also called Yoga Chikitsa - which translates to Yoga Therapy. We'll explore the meaning behind that.
Where It All Begins
Saturday February 2 12pm PDT
We begin the journey into Ashtanga Yoga with the Surya Namasakaras, or sun salutations, and standing postures. These important postures set the foundation for everything else you will do in the Ashtanga system.
Refining, strengthening, and deliberating on these paramount postures will reinforce positive patterns in your practice and set you up for success down the road.
Pose and Counter Pose
Saturday February 16 12pm PDT
In the Ashtanga Yoga system we cultivate a sense of equilibrium in our bodies. Each pose has a counter pose, every action has an opposite action. Over time, with practice, we develop symmetry and balance.
Hips, Twists, and Mudras
Sunday February 24 10am PDT
Gain a sense of balance, inner stability, proprioception and flexibility as you move through the Primary Series. This section of Primary moves the body through a variety of forward bends, twists and hip rotations.
Ashtanga Yoga trains your body slowly, preparing it step by step for increasingly complex movements.
Deep Core and Open Hips
Saturday March 2 12pm PDT
Primary Series develops both strength and openness, the two key elements to progressing through the Ashtanga Yoga system.
This week we will examine the challenging postures at the end of Primary Series - that require strength and grace to move through efficiently.
Backbends and Closing Postures
Saturday March 9 12pm PDT
Primary Series finishes with a backbend sequence. Through your Ashtanga journey you will revisit this backbend sequence again and again - so let's set a solid foundation for you to grow from.
And we would never leave out the closing postures - they tie it all together and let the practice settle.
"Jen's Online Yoga Program completely changed the way I practiced! What a breath of fresh air!"
"Jen's Interactive Online course provided an "in person" experience through the effective use of technology and her vast teaching experience. It was as good if not better than being there in person - because I can go back to the videos and Facebook group and re-watch lessons. I enhanced my own practice and learned from the struggles of others in the course group."
"It’s a great course and Jen is great teacher. I’ve done lots of these. I’ve never once actively participated. Jen makes it easy. "

Of course I'd love to see you on the live calls. But, I know that we all have lives outside of our yoga practice! You can submit questions in advance. All calls will be recorded and the recordings will be posted on the course website - so you can watch them at your convenience.
Nope! You don't have to have any exposure to Ashtanga at all. This course is appropriate for a wide range of students. You could be brand new to Ashtanga - and this course will teach you the fundamentals. Or you can have decade of experience - and this course will help you refine your practice and extract more from what you already know.
The course is six weeks long. This means we will have 6 live calls and six weeks of assignments and challenges.
There will be videos and practice prompts assigned to you each week of the course. And you will have a little pre-course work.
We will have a weekly group call over Zoom so that we can discuss the videos viewed that week and talk about our practices.
There is the opportunity to comment on the videos through the course forum.
We will have a private Facebook group to share videos and communicate with each other throughout the course. If you are not on Facebook, you can send me videos directly for feedback and suggestions.
No problem. We will build a solid foundation, break down the poses step by step so you have lots to work with, and make connections to primary series.
Plus, you will have access to all the videos well after the end of the course, so you can go back and review as your practice progresses.
This course is still for you!
We are never really "finished" with a series anyhow. There is always more to learn, especially as things continue to shift and change.
This course will help you make connections between Intermediate Series and Primary as well as Advanced Series - so you can extract more from your current practice.
No. The course is designed to stand on it's own. All videos and announcements are posted in the course forum. Facebook is used to share videos of your practice and I comment on the videos. You can send me your videos directly and privately through Google Drive or something similar.
